New technology has arrived for to listening music on the radio. This is HD radio which vastly improved both AM and FM stations and also increased the number of channels available. The old AM sound is improved to near FM audio quality and the previous FM audio now approaches that of a home CD's quality. Both HDTV and HD radio are similar because they allow digital programming. The digital signals are compressed first either at the radio station or the TV station before being transmitted. It is then decoded or de-compressed at the listener's or viewer's receiver. HD programming has made possible the broadcasting of data over ordinary radio wave spectrums. HD programming had vastly improved the quality of programs on the air.

This hybrid technology is used by TV stations in HD DTV such as sending supplemental information over their regular programming such as breaking news, latest stock market quotes and updated weather reports. HD DTV can be made interactive like playing video games, making of home assignments in distance learning programs and shopping for groceries.

Surprisingly, only a few people know about HD radio. They thought it is the same as the new satellite radio of which it is not. Going HD digital is not cheap because an HD radio costs from US$50 to about US$100 depending on the model. But HD digital is the wave of the future as more and more radio stations are converting to this new digital broadcasting format.
